Q: Hi. I have a 18 x 33 oval. Would a IS210TS RevA ProSeries sand filter 16 be enough and a Super Pump Series 1017836 RevA be more than sufficient?

In considering filtration and circulation only and no other equipment dependent upon flow rate, let's first look at minimum and maximum turnover rates. The fastest rate to circulate and filter would be within an 8 hour period, which would require about a 30 gallon per minute flow rate for the pump. On the slow rate or minimum, to circulate and filter within a 16 hour period would require about a 15 gallon per minute flow rate for the pump. Making sure that the filter can handle the highest flow rate, check the maximum design flow rate for the filter is above the maximum flow rate of the pump.
In considering other equipment, some automated chemistry systems and heating devices will also require a flow at minimum or maximum or both. Also, water features, if any, will have flow requirements, and it is a good idea to consider these now or in planning for the future when selecting a pump and filter.
The smallest capacity filter and pump combination that I would consider for this size pool would be a ProSeries Filter System model # S166T92S. This includes a 100 pound sand filter, SP0714T multiport valve, SP1592S PowerFlo Matrix Pump, and system base for both the filter and pump.
It is possible to step up in sizing both the pump and the filter together but do make sure that the filter can handle the flow rate of the pump. That way they can provide the flow rate needed, not only to circulate and filter the pool, but also to handle the flow require by other equipment.
